Tumpak Sewu Waterfall is located between the Malang and Lumajang areas. This waterfall is located at the foot of Mount Semeru and on a clear day you can see the mountain in the background. Tumpak means waterfall and Sewu means thousand waterfalls, therefore it is called thousand waterfalls. Its name is taken from the many waterfalls that surround the cliff, making it look like a thousand waterfalls. Most of them are rivers and only one comes from a river. This is because the water is always clear and only brown during the rainy season.
Around Tumpak Sewu, if you follow the ravine, along the way you will come across several other waterfalls. And at the end of the journey you will find another waterfall called Goa Tetes Waterfall. Goa Tetes Waterfall also has another beauty with the stalactite streaks formed from water droplets. Below there is also a natural swimming pool overlooking the waterfall, where you can bathe in the cool spring water.
Exploring the entire area is a great experience!
You may visit Tumpak Sewu Waterfall all year round. The ideal time to go is early in the morning, when the mist from the sun won't obscure your photos taken beneath the waterfall. If you're lucky, the waterfall will produce rainbows. However, the waterfall may be blocked owing to floods during the rainy season, which runs from December to March and involves higher rainfall.
To get to the vista, first you have to walk down a cement road. Following the viewpoint, a gravel path and wooden stairs will lead you below. You will eventually have to use a rope to descend a minor waterfall. After entering the canyon, you may choose to walk by the river by crossing it and going over the bridge. It gets harder until you get to Goa Tetes cascade since you have to trek back up the cliff past a little cascade and finally, cement stairs.
The water is fresh and the temperature is pleasant. In the parking lot, there are simply simple dining options. Bring a packed lunch or make sure you eat well before and after the hike. There are additional restrooms in the parking lot and a minimum amount near the waterfall.
