The Ijen Volcano Complex is a group of stratovolcanoes located between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency, East Java, Indonesia. You can depart from Bondowoso or Banyuwangi. It’s best to start from Bondowoso then go down to Banyuwangi if you want to continue to Bali. Bondowoso Road has good views but the mountain roads are smaller. The Ijen Caldera is about 20 km wide and is the largest caldera lake on the island of Java. Inside the crater there is a turquoise lake 1 km long which is the highlight of this mountain. This crater is the site of a labor-intensive sulfur mining operation, where baskets filled with sulfur are hauled by hand from the bottom of the crater.
Ijen Crater has a unique phenomenon where the crater emits blue electric fire, causing an increase in the number of tourists. This phenomenon also occurs during the day, but it is only at night that the amazing blue flames can be seen clearly. The blue flame is the result of burning sulfur gas released from cracks at temperatures of up to 600 degrees Celsius.
This is the largest green light zone in the world and locals call it “Blue Fire”.

At night, the temperature near the crater rim can decrease to around 10° to 2° Celsius. It remains pleasantly cool during the day, even after the sun has risen. The daytime temperature hovers around 20°C. When hiking, your body will generate more heat, so a thick jacket is unnecessary.
In the Ijen area, food options are limited, with mostly small stalls known as "Warung" and no restaurants nearby. At the starting point of Ijen, there are a few stalls selling items like instant noodles, hot drinks, and bread. It's advisable to bring snacks before traveling to Ijen. Proper breakfast can be enjoyed at your hotel.
