Bromo National Park

Nature's grandeur unfolds at Bromo's feet.

Mount Bromo is best known to people because it is 2,329 meters above sea level, even though it is not the highest peak. In fact, all national parks attract visitors. This large area is one of the popular tourist locations in East Java, Indonesia. Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park consists of this volcano. One of the few places in Indonesia where the majority of the population is Hindu, Bromo is the name of the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god.

Best Time

Bromo is open and can be visited all year round. The best time to visit Bromo is during the dry season from April to October. There is no fog at this time, especially during the coldest months of June to August, so you can enjoy the sunrise clearly. You can visit Bromo even during the rainy season. Even though it is difficult to see the sunrise, you can get a good panoramic view of Mount Bromo. During the rainy season, the savanna turns green. If you have time, avoid weekends and peak seasons (August, December, Eid al-Fitr) when there is less activity.

Our guides will always try to take you to locations that are not too busy. Note that sunset occurs around 17::30 and sunrise also occurs around 17::00. This means you'll need to wake up around 3am to reach the viewpoint at dawn.We planned to arrive while it was still dark, but we needed to get a spot before anyone else arrived. So we started at 3am.

If the volcano becomes active and dangerous, visitors to the crater are prohibited from entering and can only view it from a distance from the observation deck.

There are four main destinations in the Bromo area. The first is the sunrise viewing post (Penanjakan, King Kong Hill, Berahu Hill, Cinta Hill, & Seruni Hill), Bromo Crater, Whispering Pasir, and Savannah. To watch the sunrise, we usually take our clients to King Kong Hill because the view is beautiful and not as busy as Penanjakan. After enjoying the sunrise we headed to the Sand Sea and took some photos at Widodaren Valley.

Continue to Bromo crater and make the easy climb to the crater mouth (approx. 30 minutes). Occasionally, foul-smelling sulfur smoke rises from the crater. So let's bring a mask too. Most of our tours end at Bromo Crater. If you want to explore the area further, for a small additional fee you can go to the savanna with green hills and whispering sand. If you get this second place, you may not be able to eat breakfast at the hotel. All these destinations can be accessed by jeep. What you need to track is inside the crater. Due to extreme road conditions, private vehicles are prohibited.

Toilets are only available at the sunrise point and some are located inside the crater. Use it while it's available.

The air temperature is very cool during the day but very cold at night because the temperature can drop to zero in the dry season and rarely exceeds 10°C in the rainy season.

So you'll definitely want to bring your warm jacket here. Locals also rent out coats and hats, if you forget to bring yours. When the sun comes up, it can get very hot, so wear light clothing under your jacket.

Rain can fall at any time and it is best to measure the average rainfall of 6.6 m in meters, not in mm! But most of them occur during the rainy season – from November to March.
